Topic: Tags, Sets, Etc? How Do I Organize??

wrote Posted 7 months, 2 weeks ago
Hey everyone,

This might sound like a rant about me bitching how nothing works, but please read it with the knowledge that I'm aware this is a beta site, and as such am taking things with a grain of salt:

I've uploaded a few albums as tests from my computer, and gave them all tags (labels), "big lebowski" (from a theme party). My first goal was to create a set. So i went to smart set, selected labels, and tried many variations of big, lebowski, big lebowski, "big lebowski", etc. When i would get to selecting thumbnail, it would always return zero pictures.

Fine I figured, maybe this is broken, I'll just learn to filter by tags. So going to a picture, I would click on a tag, and the search result would come up with zero results! Even though clearly this tag must exist on the picture I found it on.

My next attempt was to create a smartset by date. I checked out the picture, found their dates taken, and used that to filter. Again, zero images.

I also thought browser might have an effect. I've tried my usual firefox v2 and also just now gave IE 7 a shot :cringe: but this turned out to be even worse, and gave script errors. The latest Safari for windows is doing the same thing as firefox.

This is very frustrating, while I am able to see a big mess of every photo I've uploaded so far, there is no way to organize any of it! Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks!

Things are a bit shakey at times for sure, but sets do more or less work. My guess is that you aren't getting anywhere because all of your photos are private. If you like that behaviour, it's a feature, if you don't like it, then it is a bug...

Set creation in IE is broken since I don't know when.

So is searching for one's own photos that are marked anything else than public. Definitly a bug.

Ah! Thanks guys, that clears up exactly what the problem was.

Does anybody know why sets based on number of views won't update?

But why would having them set to private matter? (I guess that implies I think it's a bug. Hehehe) I'm in exactly the same position as Afiend. I've uploaded a bunch of photos to test this site (it's going well except for tagging and sets, I think). I have three uploads I've done, each was labeled at the time of upload with a tag and each was set to private. I try to make smart sets and it fails at the same point Afiend's efforts fail. I select a photo and click on its tag/label and I'm told there's nothing with that label. Err, what? There are, depending on which tag, at least a couple hundred images with that label.

I have a different site I use (I won't mention it here out of respect for our host). It has a few minor limitations (size<3MB, no tags, random URLs for images and galleries, no 'front page' for a user; basically, it's just a repository and I have to provide my friends w/ links) but it does have galleries/sets. I like most of what I see here and want this to work, but labels and sets need to work for me to commit fully to the change.

It shouldn't, in my opinion as well.

Search doesn't show private photos, not even your own. It doesn't matter wether you click a tag or enter a term in the search box: both starts the same action. Which you can see when you look at the URL in your browser.

It works though with photos marked "friends" and/or "family". I'm not sure if it ever did with private photos.

Users have complained more than once and for some time about this unlogical and unexpected behaviour. If it is indeed a bug or just a non-feature we can't be sure because we don't know the code/procedure/logic and Kris has never given an explanation.

I've noticed in the blogosphere that this is lack of support is the main frustration. I've made several postings and sent a couple of emails and heard nothing back. I'm not a paying member, so I expect only a minimum of support, and I'm sure this place is going through some growing pains, but I'd like to at least have the requests for help acknowledged. That's especially important with an issue like this where there are a number of people asking about it.

Hmmm... Maybe I'll try marking them all as 'Family' (I'd want them to have access eventually anyway) and see how that works. Oh, wait... I have 1200+ photos... How am I to change that many photos when you cant make group edits?!? :_(

Maybe you could utilize AutoHotkey or AutoIt?

Maybe you could utilize AutoHotkey or AutoIt?

I've never tried AutoHotkey, but from what I hear it has a good chance of working. However, my recent test failed. I uploaded a new group marked as visible to family, and still could not make a Smart Set.

Since some of my photos needs some changes (orientation, lighting, etc.), I'm considering just dumping the whole account and starting over. Then, I can watermark my photos and upload them as public, thus most likely making it possible to make the Smart Sets.

BUT

I've read elsewhere that you can't actually delete an account, only photos. So I need to make AutoHotkey work for that, too.

Basically, the blogosphere has been very happy about the features here, but they've been disappointed in the usability and help (lack thereof). I have to agree, and that saddens me because there is a really good potential here for a game-changing winner. I really believe all it would take (hehe I say that like the programming is easy, but even non-programmer-I know better) is fixing the sets (Smart Sets, custom sets, regardless of privacy settings) allowing actions performed on groups of photos whether sets or manually selected, a real manual and/or help wiki, and at least acknowledge receipt of our emails requesting help). I honestly don't think I'm asking much, but, as I've said, I'm not a programmer, so I could be wrong.

I just did: http://www.zooomr.com/photos/ignorant/sets/32934/
You will see 15 pics, but I'm getting all 41.

Did you select a "cover" photo? Because that needs to a public one. You could upload some dummy.

I think this comment pretty much sums it up.

Ah, now see, I knew part of the puzzle was the cover photo, but I didn't think to try a public image. I'll give that a try tonight.

I'd say that's a pretty fair look at the situation, and one I can understand personally all too well. While I have the same tendencies, I make it a point to have people around me who keep me grounded and 'real'. I've also seen a lot of this in startups. Entrepreneurs rarely run their business well and, for the sake of its survival, have to hand it over to a business person to run.

As for some of what I've asked for, I've also offered help. Sure, I'm no programmer, but I have many other skills, mostly tech, but also writing and others. I offered to have him hand over raw documentation on how this all works so I could develop a proper help file and/or wiki. No response to an offer of help even. Wow.

And you, Ignorant, have been the best help here. Thank you!

Hey! That works! OK, so using tags AND A PUBLIC PHOTO as the cover pic, you can make Smart sets. Now if we can just figure out the rest of these issues... At least progress has been made. Thanks Afiend.

Yes it works, i can make smart sets. You have to selct a public pic.

I have been struggled with private photos as well and waited a long to see if it would be fixed. So I moved to flickr, a quick fix for me.

Just to let you know, the hack of using a public picture as a cover only works for tagged private/family/friends only pictures, it doesn't work if you try to make a set based on date taken.

It could work for other fields too, like geotags, but I haven't checked.

Unfortunately I have nearly 1000 pictures uploaded without tags. Date taken would work perfectly for me as they are travel pictures and I'd like to group them by destination (which corresponds to the date they were taken on).

I want to sort my photos in the order of "date taken", not recent upload or best pic. Is this possible??
And can I upload videos yet?

Date taken isn't a reliable field to sort on because not all pictures have the necessary exif data. Sorting has to be done on something reliable for every photo. The work around is to upload them in the order you take them.

As far as video uploads, I personally never want to see that on Zooomr.

Why can't there be an option to sort by file name? I normally leave the file name as it came out the camera and use the 'Description' to give details. The file name is normally in ascending order and is almost certainly more reliable that date taken if the file name is left to the camera default.
